Are The Developers Active?

In December 2020, H1Z1 was acquired by Enad Global 7 as part of the Daybreak acquisition, which saw beloved franchises such as Everquest and Planetside join the  Enad Global 7 family.

Enad Global 7 have very graciously assured fans they will look into reviving H1z1/Z1 Battle Royale as part of this acquisition by rolling back the game before the pre-season 3 combat updates; however, they stressed that this might not be financially feasible, and any potential revival is purely academic at this point.

As of January 2022, the most recent patch was over a year ago (October 2020) and included only cosmetic items and loot boxes.

When you consider that the October 2020 update was the start of a new season, it's pretty easy to see why H1Z1 Battle Royale is losing ground against every other major Battle Royale.

A new season should add new mechanics, points of interest, weapons and limited-time modes, but it's clear that H1Z1 Battle Royale is too far gone for that level of developer attention, and it's time the community and developers let H1Z1 go onto its eternal reward.

H1Z1, in many ways, introduced the battle royale concept to the wider gaming community, and I would have rather it had ended back when there were still people to miss it than to fade away without a whimper, the object of ridicule a few years down the line.

How Many People Play H1Z1 Battle Royale?

H1Z1 Battle Royale is fairing slightly better than its PC cousin community-wise, solo matches are still possible off-peak, and while full lobbies are mostly a thing of the past outside peak EU/NA hours, a few streamers occasionally drop by, which revitalises the community for a few days, before the majority leave again for greener pastures.

Squad matchmaking in the EU is poor, with lobbies rarely reaching 25% capacity and often launching closer to 15% capacity and solo matchmaking is even worse, with weekend solo EU lobbies struggling to reach 15 players and weekday lobbies unable to reach double digits outside of peak EU/NA times.

I understand WHY the developer wishes to reduce matchmaking times, but I would prefer waiting 10 minutes for a full lobby instead of being forced to play back-to-back games in a 15-player lobby.

H1Z1 was designed with large lobbies in mind, and anything less than full lobbies makes it feel empty, especially with smaller lobbies starting with most of the map already being covered in toxic gas.

Restricting all players to the final few gas circles removes the one advantage that H1Z1 Battle Royale had left, a nostalgic map, and one which, for many, was their first foray into the battle royale genre.

TL;DR: The community has diminished beyond the point of sustainability and will only continue to decrease the longer H1Z1 goes without a substantial content update.

Is H1Z1 Battle Royale Dead?

H1Z1 Battle Royale is dead because it failed to innovate; despite having a 12month+lead on the competition, it squandered community goodwill and development time.

We saw this happen twice, first with the PC, which failed to compete with PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds, despite having a larger community and longer development time, and then a second time when the PS4 build failed to innovate and cement its position while PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds was still an Xbox One exclusive title.

Perhaps it was arrogance or hubris, but the developers failed to recognise threats right in front of them, and because of this, H1Z1 was surpassed by multiple titles that were both better developed and more popular, such as PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds, Fortnite Battle Royale, Apex Legends and Call of Duty Warzone.

Final Verdict.

H1Z1 Battle Royale retains a small but loyal community, and many people, myself included, would return if we could see a sustained effort by the developers to create a top-tier battle royale experience.

Unfortunately, that outcome seems unlikely at this point, and H1z1 will continue to slip into obscurity until the developers finally pull the plug and put a once-great battle royale out of its misery.
